Frequently Asked Questions

Listed below are answers to common questions we receive at the Learning Grove Childcare Centre. If your question is not answered below, please feel free to contact us to get an answer for your question. Our contact information is available on the Contact Us page.

Do I pay for days my child is sick or away?

Yes. You are responsible for paying for all days that your child is enrolled. For example; your child is registered for Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays. You are billed for these three days per week even when your child is absent.

Do you have half-day programs?

We do not have part-day programs. You may choose to bring your child for part of the day; however, the daily fee is still the same.

Do you have subsidies?

Learning Grove doesn’t have subsidies, but we are able to accept portable subsidies. The subsidies are attached to the child and not a centre. Portable subsidies are available through the Department of Community Services to help offset the cost of childcare. For more information or to apply for a subsidy you may phone our local Department of Community Services office at 245-5811. We also have applications for the subsidies on site.

Can staff give my child medication?

Staff is permitted to give a child medication provided the medication is prescribed by a doctor; the medication is in the original container; and a parent signs a medication permission form. Over the counter medication such as Tylenol will not be given at the centre.

What happens if my child gets sick during the day?

If your child becomes ill during the day, a staff member will contact you to pick your child up. If you are unable to be contacted the person listed in the emergency contacts will be contacted. We advise that you have a backup plan in place for when your child is sick. Children must be free from illness for 24 hours before returning.

How do I pay my childcare fees?

Childcare fees are payable by the end of the first week of a given month for that month. They can be paid by cash or cheque. Postdated cheques can be left at the centre. Cheques are to be made payable the Digby Area Learning Association.

What does my child need while at the centre?

Your child will need a pair of indoor shoes and at least one change of clothing. If your child is not trained you will need to send diapers and wipes with your child.

What if I don’t have time to feed my child breakfast?

You may send breakfast with your child providing it fits into our nutritional guidelines.

Can I bring birthday cake on my child’s birthday?

No, we do not serve birthday cakes at the centre. As per our nutritional policy we do not serve food with little or no nutritional value. If you would like to send something for your child’s birthday you may discuss healthier alternatives with the director.

Can we bring toys from home?

We do allow each child to have 1 soft toy for rest time.
There are times that children are requested to bring an item from home for show and tell.
Other than the two examples noted above we discourage children from bringing toys from home. The centre will not be responsible for toys that are lost or broken.

Does my child have to be toilet-trained to come to the centre?

Children are accepted into the toddler program (ages 18months-3yrs) who are not yet trained. Children must be trained to enter into the preschool program (ages 3-5).

If I am unable to pick up my child can I send someone else?

On your child’s application each family provides the centre with a list of individuals who are authorized to pick up their child. You may send someone on that list to pick up your child if you are unable to do so. If you are sending someone who is not on the pick-up list you MUST inform staff that you are sending a particular person to pick up your child. In the past staff have had to tell people that they are unable to pick up a child as they were not notified by a parent.
